My Latest Online Obsession: Rise of Mythos
Rise of Mythos is an online Collectible Card Game developed by Changyou (as you might suspect from the "Chang" part, this is a Chinese based company.)
I'm also not sure a computer game actually qualifies as a CCG. The "cards" are virtual in nature consisting of digital information stored on a computer server. You're not really collecting anything, it's all just zeros and ones.
That being said, the game is a bit addictive.
You play one of four classes: Mage, Priest, Ranger or Warrior. Each class has access to unique skills unavailable to the other classes.
Play consists of a deck of "cards" played on a field of battle. Battle can be against other players or against computer enemies. Most battles consist of 1 to 4 players on each side, with the sides having the same number of players.
The exception are battles players wage against bosses. These fights consist of four players cooperating to combat a single boss. The Bosses have much larger decks than players and draw more than one card at a time. Boss fights range from relatively easy to extremely difficult fights requiring specialized decks and tactics in order to succeed.
The classes are fairly self explanatory as to the skills available. Mages use offensive spells. Priest use defensive spells. Warriors use melee attacks and skills that boost the offensive capabilities of the creatures summoned to combat field.
Rangers are a little different from what one might expect given the typical Ranger present in fantasy type roll-playing games. The Rise of Mythos Ranger does have access to ranged attacks, but plays more like a member of special ops. (Think the American Military version of a Ranger.)
Where to Play
The game can be played on various web sites. Each site uses different servers. If you know someone playing the game and want to play with them you need to make sure you pick the same server, not just the same web site.
riseofmythos.com
The site ran by the American subsidiary of the game's developers (Gamefuse). Has multiple servers to choose from. Playing on this site requires creating an account on the site (which is free) or logging in using a facebook account.
Kongregate
Online gaming site that offers a large selection of games. Again, playing requires creating a Kongregate account or logging in using a facebook account. Hosts multiple servers (5 when this was written).
Instead of using a facebook account to log into Gamefuse/Kongregate you can just play the game on facebook. Currently has 5 game servers.
Yahoo!
Yahoo! has a single server available for those with Yahoo! accounts. (You can log into Yahoo! using a facebook or Google account as well.)
Armor Games
Online game site with large number of games available. Again, an Armor Games or facebook account is needed to access the games. (Are you starting to sense a theme with facebook?) Hosts a single game server.
Miniclip
Another online game site that hosts a single Rise of Mythos server. Can create a Miniclip account or login using facebook.
You notice that all these sites allow login using a facebook account? Gamefuse has a facebook page as well as a page for the game itself. The company offers promotions that are available to those with a facebook account.
Allowing people with a facebook account to log in using that account helps promote the game on facebook.
